Before You Import: 5 Documents Every Chinese EV Needs

Before You Import: 5 Documents Every Chinese EV Needs

The car you can buy cheap is not the car you can import. The gap is paperwork - and most first-time importers find out after the container sails. Here is the five-document compliance checklist I run before any unit moves.

One - market type-approval. Every market has one: Europe's type-approval, Gulf's GSO, Saudi's SABER, ASEAN's TISI or SNI, Russia/Central Asia's EAC. Ask for the certificate number and a validity window, not a brochure claim. A sticker photo is not an answer.

Two - variant-specific certification. Approval is often tied to battery pack, charger standard and even trim. The base hatchback may clear; the long-range version may not. Price the exact unit you can actually clear.

Three - charging and ADAS standard match. A CCS2 car will not charge on a GB/T grid, and an ADAS suite cleared in China is not automatically cleared in Europe or the Gulf. Confirm the standard before you promise range and features.

Four - local SABER or equivalent registration. In Saudi especially, SABER is the gate - no registration, no clearance. Build the fee and lead time into the quote, not a footnote.

Five - warranty and local service commitment. The document that protects you after sale: who pays, locally, in your currency. No local service plan, no signature.

The importers who win treat certification as the first filter, not the last. A car you cannot clear is not a discount - it is a stranded asset. Run the five before you sign.
