Every two cars China exports now, one is electric.

The August data makes it impossible to miss. Of 1.01 million vehicles China shipped abroad, 526,000 were new-energy — about 52% of the total, the third straight month exports have been more than half electric. At home, NEVs took a record 60.6% of new-car sales. Over eight months, China exported 7.153 million vehicles, 3.435 million of them NEVs.

Picture the buyer's desk in 2026. A distributor in Lagos, Lima or Riyadh screening models isn't choosing between "Chinese EVs" and "everything else." The global EV supply is increasingly China-sourced, and the gap is widening — NEV exports more than doubled year on year while total volume rose 65%.

The number to watch is 52%. If NEV keeps outpacing total exports, your 2027 sourcing plan has to assume China-built EVs as the default supply, not a cheaper alternative to park at the edge of the lineup. Brands that treat them as the core get allocation, pricing and model freshness. Brands that treat them as a side bet get last-year's trim.

This is the quiet part of the export story: it isn't just that China sells more cars abroad. It sells smarter cars abroad, and the mix is tilting electric faster than any forecast.
